Republican U.S. House candidate Nick Begich III moved closer to defeating Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola after 46,000 additional Alaska ballots were counted by Wednesday. Begich was ahead by 10,133 votes before Tuesday’s ballot count. He now leads by 9,435 votes, or just over 3%.

Republicans have won enough seats to control the U.S. House, securing their hold on the government alongside President-elect Donald Trump.

With a dozen races still to be called, the G.O.P. was two seats away from the 218 that would allow the party to claim a coveted governing trifecta: control of the House, Senate and White House.
