The All England Club is blaming human error for a glaring mistake by the electronic system that replaced human line judges this year at Wimbledon.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova overcame a line-calling technology malfunction on a key point en route to defeating Sonay Kartal 7-6 (3), 6-4 on Sunday to make her second Wimbledon quarterfinal nine years after her first appearance.
Wimbledon has been hit by yet another electric line-calling glitch with an umpire forced to halt a match on Tuesday to boos from an angry crowd. Hawk-Eye went off randomly during Taylor Fritz’s quarter-final victory over Karen Khachanov – despite the ball being nowhere near the lines.
For the first time in 148 years, Wimbledon has no line judges and is instead using electronic line calling. This means that the usual chants of ‘fault’ and ‘out’ are no longer coming from an actual human person, but instead are now coming from AI.
