What is the fat-over-lean rule in oil painting? 🖌️Paint with a high ratio of oil to pigment is called “fat,” while paint with less oil is “lean.” Painting fat over lean keeps top layers more flexible as paint dries and cures. Oil painters need to know about the Fat over Lean principle (google it!) As I paint ‘alla prima’ in one sitting, mostly the principle doesn’t matter so much to me, however, if I’m ever adding a detail layer on top of a base layer, I need to ensure the ‘fat’, more oily, paint goes on top of the ‘lean’, less oily, layers. The fat over lean issue confuses most artists starting their adventure with oils, so let me explain… Mediums have different chemical reaction when mixed with oils. Lean mediums are those that speed up the drying time (eg Liquin or solvents). Fat mediums are those that either do nothing to the drying time or slow it down (eg walnut oil).
